What Schema Markup Does (and Doesn't Do) in 2026
Schema markup still earns its place in 2026: entity definition, rich results eligibility and technical hygiene. Here is what the evidence says about schema and AI answers.

Search in 2026 is a hybrid. People still use classic search results, and they increasingly ask AI assistants such as ChatGPT, Perplexity and Gemini. A common claim is that schema markup is the key to showing up in those AI answers. The evidence does not support that claim, yet schema still matters for other, well-established reasons.
What Schema Markup Does Well
- 1. Entity definition: It states who you are, what you sell, and who wrote what and when, in a vocabulary every major search engine reads.
- 2. Rich results eligibility: Product, Review, FAQ, Event, Recipe and other types make pages eligible for enhanced search results with prices, ratings and dates.
- 3. Technical hygiene: It keeps your facts consistent across thousands of pages and exposes gaps such as missing prices, authors or dates.
What the Evidence Says About Schema and AI Answers
A controlled study compared about 1,900 pages that added schema with 4,000 similar pages that did not. AI citations from ChatGPT and Google's AI Mode changed by roughly 2 percent, which is indistinguishable from zero, and citations in AI Overviews fell slightly. The study only looked at pages that were already highly cited, so it does not settle the question for every site. It does mean there is no good evidence that adding schema makes AI assistants cite you, and Google states that no special structured data is required for its AI features.
The factors with stronger evidence behind them are different: how often other sites mention your brand, how well your pages rank in search, how fresh your content is, and whether AI crawlers can access your site at all.
A Sensible Strategy for 2026
Keep your schema complete and accurate, because rich results and consistent entity data are worth having on their own. Then measure AI visibility directly instead of assuming it. Track which questions mention your brand, which competitors appear instead, and which sources the assistants cite. Those sources tell you where to earn coverage and which pages to improve next.
