Ask ChatGPT about your restaurant, online store or consulting firm and you may get a vague answer, an outdated one, or none at all. It is tempting to blame missing schema markup. The evidence points elsewhere, and knowing where helps you spend your effort on what actually changes the answer.

Where AI Assistants Get Their Answers

When an assistant searches the web before answering, it works from the pages its search step retrieves. Pages that rank well for the question, pages that are recent, and pages that many other sources reference are the ones most likely to be read and cited. Published research on AI citations finds that most of them point to third-party sources such as reviews, comparison lists and industry coverage, rather than to the brand's own site.

The answer about your business is therefore shaped mostly by what the wider web says about you, and by whether your own pages are findable, crawlable and clear when they are retrieved.

    Where Schema Markup Fits

Schema markup (JSON-LD) states your facts in a standard, machine-readable vocabulary: your organization, products, prices, opening hours, authors and dates. It keeps those facts consistent across your site, and it makes pages eligible for rich results in Google.

What it has not been shown to do is increase AI citations. A controlled study comparing about 1,900 pages that added schema with 4,000 similar pages that did not found no measurable change in citations from ChatGPT or Google's AI Mode, and a small decline in AI Overviews. The study only covered pages that were already heavily cited, so it cannot rule out an effect elsewhere. It still gives no support to the idea that schema earns AI mentions, and Google's own guidance says no special structured data is needed to appear in its AI features.

Keep schema for what it does well: accurate entity data and rich results. Do not expect it to change what an assistant says on its own.

What Tends to Change the Answer

    • • Coverage on the third-party sites assistants cite for your category: reviews, directories, "best of" lists and industry press.
    • • Ranking in the search indexes assistants rely on for the questions your buyers ask.
    • • Clear, current pages that answer those questions directly, with specific facts, dates and sources.
    • • Open access for AI crawlers such as OAI-SearchBot, so your pages can be retrieved at all.

    Measure Before and After

Because no single change guarantees a better answer, the practical approach is to measure. Ask the questions your buyers ask, across several assistants, on a regular schedule. Record whether your brand is mentioned, how it is described, which competitors appear, and which sources are cited. Then make one change at a time and check whether the answers move.

Brandop's AI Visibility tracking does this across eight AI engines, and its schema automation keeps your entity data accurate in the background. Together they show you what the assistants say about you and point you to the sources that shape it.
